The boys 8th grade team from Our Lady of Humility beat the St. Joseph Knights 51-36 Monday night in Libertyville. The Berets from Beach Park now have a record of 5-2 (2-1 conference). The Knights fell to 3-4 (2-2). The two teams had faced each other previously when OLH won by 11 points.
OLH jumped to an early lead and held a 16-11 advantage after the first quarter. Kaden Moulton had the hot touch. Moulton finished with 17 points. But it wasn’t all him. Juwelz Jones contributed 6 points, and Izrmel Lopez’s adorable, 14- month sister ate 3 crackers from her stroller while cheering on her big brother.
In the second quarter, Elliot Cowart found Ashton Lutz slashing to the basket for a backdoor layup. The Berets tried to extend their lead going into halftime when they ran their famous play, “San Antonio.” The Knights sniffed out the down screens and made the set play look more like the Alamo.
The Knights continued to fight. Zach McGargill had a darting left handed layup, and Thomas Hunt challenged the Berets all night inside the paint. He led the home team with 10 points. The Knights received a boost of energy from dangerous swing man, Jonathan Apgar. He ignited a comeback in the second half that brought the crowd to its feet. Apgar’s field goal, steal, free throw, and another steal fueled the Knights. Luke Nichol capped the Knights 7-2 run with a driving layup.
But The Berets found their man to cool off the fire. As time expired in the third quarter, Moulton swished a 3 pointer to lift the Berets to a 40-23 lead. It was a successful game for the Berets’ Coach Marcus Moulton, “I think our team did well because we shot the ball well, did a good job passing, and handled the press well.”
